Welcome back to my Introduction to Crochet series! Today I'll show you the half double crochet stitch. In case you missed it, here are the links to my previous posts in this series:

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

Before we get started, let's revisit the turning chains I talked about in the single crochet lesson. To turn your work and start a new row with single crochet, you need a turning chain of 1. The half double crochet stitch is slightly taller than a single crochet, so you need a turning chain of 2. We'll also be skipping the very first stitch of the row after turning. So let's get started!

First, chain 22.

This time, we're going to yarn over first. So, yarn over, and insert your hook into the third chain from the hook. My thumb is on the third chain in the picture below.

Yarn over again, and pull through the chain. You will have three loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through all three loops.

That's it! See how the stitch is a little taller than the single crochet? Go ahead and finish the row repeating the steps above.

At the end of the row, chain 2. Now, turn your work and make a hdc in the second stitch from the chain. We are skipping the first stitch of the row after we turn, because the chain 2 counts as our first hdc stitch.

 Go ahead and complete the row.

When you come back to your first 2 chains that you skipped in row one, you'll make your last stitch into the top chain. Here's what that looks like:
